ACME response to Primary Mathematics Review
17 June 2008
In response to the publication of Sir Peter William's report on
primary mathematics, Professor Adrian Smith, Chair of the Advisory
Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), said:
"We fully support Sir Peter's recommendation for a maths
specialist in every primary school. There is a real need for a
larger pool of knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers of the
subject at this level, with the freedom to support the teaching of
maths in their schools. The report rightly identifies the
pressing need to provide professional development to develop and
improve good teaching of maths in primary schools.
"To deliver these measures it is vital that primary schools
receive the required resources and that specialist maths teachers
are given appropriate incentives to take on extra
responsibilities."
