Professor Celia Hoyles, recipient of the Royal Society Kavli Education Medal

The first Royal Society Kavli Education Medal has been awarded to Celia Hoyles, Professor of Mathematics Education, Insitute of Education & Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics "in recognition of her outstanding contribution to research in mathematics education".  Professor Hoyles delivered a lecture at the ASE Conference in Reading on Thursday, 6 January 2011 entitled "Tackling the mathematics: potential and challenges" at which Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society presented Professor Hoyles with her medal.

Professor Hoyles has donated the prize to the Centenary fund at the Institute of Education to support postgraduate study in mathematics education at the Institute of Education, University of London for an applicant from a developing country.
