ACME comments on Ofsted Report

22 May 2012

Professor Steve Sparks, Chair of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), said:

ACME is pleased to welcome the Ofsted report on mathematics education, which is an excellent, comprehensive analysis of the state of maths teaching in the UK.  The report highlights the rise in numbers of students studying mathematics to 18, something that ACME reports have demonstrated has enormous benefit to the individual and society as a whole.
Last year, ACME raised concerns about the number of schools using early and repeated entry to GCSE examinations, which research has demonstrated is to the detriment of almost all students.  We are delighted that the Ofsted report has indicated that school inspections will challenge these practices and hope that this, in combination with continued pressure from Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove, will discourage these unhelpful school policies that are not beneficial to pupils' understanding and achievement in mathematics.
