National Standards in Numeracy and Functional Skills mathematics review

11 August 2016

The Education and Training Foundation was asked by Minister Nick Boles to undertake a review of mathematics and English Functional Skills qualifications. See a full overview of the Review here.

As part of the Functional Skills Reform Programme they are revising the national standards for adult literacy and numeracy. Once finalised, these standards will be used to underpin a range of qualifications - including Functional Skills - up to and including level two and establish the skills, knowledge and understanding that is expected at each level.

This summer, the consultant undertaking the consultation, PyeTait Consulting, has asked for input on a draft National Standard in Numeracy.  A second draft of the standards was published on Friday 5 August. This second draft is available for feedback  until Friday 19 August.

The Education and Training Foundation will also produce content specification and core curricula for Functional Skills qualifications.  A draft of the subject content will be published on 15 August 2016 and will be available for consultation until 12 September 2016.

ACME wrote a letter to the Education and Training Foundation setting out further opportunities for reflection in terms of the Functional Skills mathematics review. The letter is available here and the response here.
